Reading and Writing Program

The Killer Bees have teamed up with school districts around the Valley for the past four years to implement the Reading and Writing with the Bees Program. The Monitor and South Texas College also partner up with the Killer Bees to help promote this program. Each child that participates gets a Reading and Writing supplement that features hockey related weekly lessons the kids must complete. The entire program lasts 15 weeks. At the completion of the program the Killer Bees, STC and The Monitor invite all participants to a regular season, kid’s only game at Dodge Arena.

Adopt–A–Bee

A program designed for those schools who are not participating in the Reading and Writing with the Bees Program. Adopt-A-Bee reinforces lesson plans in areas of geography, math and history and helps kids “think outside the box.” A class “adopts” a Bee player and studies things like where they are from, how far they travel on road trips, the history of the cities the team visits, etc. The program can be tailored to fit the needs of individual classes and teachers. Corporate Care Club

Local businesses purchase season tickets to Killer Bees games and then donate them back to the organization, which in turn distributes them among different non-profit groups (or a group of the sponsor’s choosing) so that local underprivileged children get the opportunity to attend a game.

Driscoll Goals for Kids

The Killer Bees and Driscoll Children’s Hospital, the only non-profit children’s hospital in the McAllen/Mission area, is getting together again this season to raise money for Driscoll. Different individuals and companies have the opportunity to sponsor Killer Bee goals for different monetary amounts. Then at the end of the season the goals are tallied and the money that is raised is donated to Driscoll. The money that is earned is going to decorate and improve their cardiology rooms. News writing/Broadcast Journalism Intro

Geared towards students in the sixth grade and higher, this program is intended to help students understand the role of broadcast and print journalism and the structure of a typical newspaper story. Students are also exposed to some of the equipment used in field reporting, studio editing, and may have the opportunity to attend a game as “junior reporters.” In that case, students will have the opportunity to interview players and coaches after the game. Player/Staff Appearances

If you would like a visit from a Killer Bee player or staff member you must make your request at least 30 days before the event takes place. A player/staff request form is available here. E-mail your request to jkurth@killerbeehockey.com or fax it to 956-843-6644. Not all requests can be honored, but we do our best to accommodate as many as possible.

Donation Requests

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees are asked to support many worthwhile charitable causes and events each year. We make every effort to accommodate as many requests are possible. However, due to the number of requests we receive, we are simply unable to accommodate all requests. In order for your organization to be considered for a donation item or appearance, and to ensure fairness and maximize reach, you must comply with the following guidelines:

• All donation and appearance requests must be received online or printed, completed and mailed or faxed on the on-line request form no later than 30 days prior to your need. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
• Your request for a donation item or appearance must be received 30 days prior to the day your organization needs the item.
• Requesting non-profit organizations must have a 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. You must enter your organization’s valid Tax Exempt ID # on the online form in order for your request to be considered. (If you are a business sponsoring a charitable event, please ask a member of the charity to complete the donation request form.)
• Multiple donations to single organizations in a calendar year are rare.
