BATS DOUBLE UP BEES 4-2

Hidalgo, Texas — The Austin Ice Bats nabbed four points this weekend as they defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees for the second time 4-2 Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. Brendan Cook (2-0-2) skated away with the game-winner in the contest, while Mike Bartlett (1-3-4) posted four points in the win.

Rio hit first early in the first when Robin Big Snake connected on helpers from Danny Lapointe and Dan McNeill at the 2:57 mark, but midway through the period Bartlett evened things up on the power play.

Just 54 seconds into the second period a shot by Rio right-winger Rob Voltera broke the glass behind and to the left of Austin netminder Miguel Beaudry to delay the game a bit, which proved to be the most notable event in the period until Tuomi, with just 0.4 left on the clock, sent one home on the power play giving the Bees the 2-1 lead going into the final frame.

Austin battled back with a goal at the 11:24 mark, once again on the power play, by Darryl McArthur. With just 3:21 left in the game Brendan Cook pulled the Bats to the lead with a shot that bounced past Bees goalie Dave Lemanowicz off a Rio skate.

Cook added his second goal of the night into an empty net to secure four points so far in a three-game weekend that concludes Sunday at home vs. Corpus Christi. With the win, coupled with a 3-2 Corpus Christi shootout loss vs. Texas and 7-4 Amarillo loss to Arizona, gives the Bats a five point lead over the Apes for the final playoff berth in the South.

Beaudry picked up his second win in as many games in net with 27 saves, while David Lemanowicz suffered the loss with 34 saves.

The Bees take on the Corpus Christi Rayz Wednesday night at the Dodge Arena, then travel to Laredo Friday and return home Saturday to face the Bucks in their final game of the season. Game time is slated for 7:35 p.m. Wednesday.

COACH FIXTER SOUDBITES

When Tuomi scored in the final second of the second period what were your thoughts?

“I thought it was a great play by Lapointe to set-up Tuomi. It was a great goal, and we played pretty well. I thought we were more deserving of a better fate tonight. It was a huge goal and I was happy for Mike, and it was a great play by Danny Lapointe.”

Where there any changes in the team tonight compared to last night?

“The team put their minds to playing hard, and they played hard from the start. I thought we had a heck of a first period through the end. We took a lot of penalties and we took a very bad penalty to give them an opportunity and they took the opportunity and that was a killer for us. The third goal went in like a pinball, right off Jeremy Van Hoof’s skate and what are you going to do about that. I think the boys put their mind to playing hard and they did.”

The guys played hard and Austin had to earn the win. It just wasn’t handed to them like it was Friday Night. They played better Saturday night. With three games left in the season would like to see the team go out on a winning note. If they lose make the Rayz and the Bucks earn the wins and play like they did Saturday night.

Well since this slow paced seasson is getting to its end,(good grief), We wonder when does the organization efforts start taking place to get ready for next seasson? Do they have scouts looking players already? We understand there might be some players that are on the wish list, but really will the coach and the bees organization put all their knowledge and efforts to obtain and bring players that do care and do seem to love to play hockey and really reflect the positive feeling after a win? We feel the organization really has to make a big turn around and by the words of the leader or the team, the coach, to have players that do have blood flowing through their veins during the games and don’t leave us disgusted with their performance, ohh and best of all for the little kids not to have nightmares after a horrifying kids game, and believe me, kids do not forget outcomes of horrible games. Looking forward for next seasson and awaiting to hear some really good news. go bees go! Which players will be retiring after saturdays game? which ones will stay??
