BONAR’S OT PENALTY SHOT WINS IT FOR BEES

By admin | March 10, 2008

Austin, Texas — Josh Bonar’s penalty shot in overtime vaulted the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees to their second win in a row over the Austin Ice Bats in 3-2 final at Chaparral Ice.

Bonar drew the penalty shot 1:13 into overtime after being hooked from behind by Bats defenseman Darryl McArthur on a breakaway.

The Killer Bees led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Josh Bonar (3:39) and Jason Weitzel (10:52). Travis Banga set up Bonar’s 18th of the season and second since January 8, while Lance Herauf dished a pass to Weitzel who snapped home his seventh.

Banga, who was held scoreless last night, now has at least one point in seven of his last eight games. Herauf and Weitzel reconnected after combining for five points (2-3-5) in Saturday’s win over the Bats.

Ted Vandermeer and R.G. Flath responded for Austin in the third just 24 seconds apart to tie things at 2-2.

AJ Bucchino made 41 saves in goal for the Bees to earn his fifth win of the season. Miguel Beaudry took the loss with 29 saves.

The Bees return to action this Tuesday at home vs. Bossier-Shreveport in the annual Kid’s Day Game at 10:30 a.m. Listen live on ESPN Radio 1240 AM.

NOTES: Nick Warriner, Josh Garbutt and Dennis Maxwell were the Rio scratches…Maxwell took a two-game suspension for a physical abuse of officials penalty on Saturday night…Warriner and Garbutt are day-to-day…Jason Weitzel has four points (2-2-4) in his last two games…With seven games left, the playoff race is now a one-point affair for the Bees…The most the Bees can finish with is 53 points, so any combination of a Rio regulation loss and an Austin win eliminates the Bees from playoff contention.

Another exciting game for sure and lots of passion in the play of the Bees. That is what make a team go. Weitzel and Herauf ( The Balgonie Duo) had a hot weekend. Hope they can keep it going too.

When a ref dishes out 7 penalties in a row on the same team I have to starting wondering ( or worrying ) and I get a bit suspicious.

GREAT commentary on the radio too. Your excitement at the goals and near goals makes up for the lack of video at these Austin games.

I know the team is going to finish off the rest of the season on a high note now that the passion is back in their game. Super play all around.

Let me take a stab at the Killer Bees success of late. I believe the new additions in Chmiel, Weitzel, Garbutt and (this is probably the number one reason), sticking Maxwell on defense has made all the difference and tremendous turnaround in our defensive play. Chmiel has added a dman that knows when to pinch and will take the risk when possible. Garbutt rushes the puck with energy. Maxwell who is just so smart and knows the defensive zone coverage and is not afraid to crash the boards. And Weitzel who has taken some heat off the defense with his fairly decent back check and offensive skill. Toumi has shown flashes but is still not that smart with the puck. He skates well. Bonar’s lack of production over the past couple of months is partially due to the number of shots he has taken. Shots are down. He is not getting the puck enough on the Banga line, exception last night. Lapointe has chipped in, but is a bit of a liability on defense. Why Big Snake and Lapointe were out there killing a penalty in a 2-1 game in the 3rd period, is a question I would like answered by the coach. Voltera finally started playing physical and standing up for his team mates has also contributed to a better team chemistry thing. Bochinno has been solid. Unfortunately its a little to late in the season to find the will and way to win. I hope this group gets a chance to redeem themselves next year and become a contender. I’m digressing so will end it here.
