RAYZ, TAPP, END RIO’S STREAK

By Killer Bee Hockey | March 2, 2008

Corpus Christi — Justin Quenneville scored twice and added an assist as the Corpus Christi Rayz ended a six-game winless skid with a 5-3 win over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Sunday at American Bank Center. The loss for Rio ended a three-game winning streak.

Quenneville tied things in the first on the power play 44 seconds after Rio’s Jeremy Van Hoof gave the Bees a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal at the seven minute mark of the first period.

Lance Herauf’s 14th goal of the season 5:51 into the second gave Rio a 2-1 lead on a shot that beat Jason Tapp off the inside post, but the Rayz answered back at 7:29 with Chris Shaffer banking home his ninth goal off a Rio skate to tie it at 2-2.

Tapp turned aside 32 Rio shots over the final 40 minutes of the game, and 39 overall, while Joe Blaznek scored on the power play late in the second to make it 3-2 Corpus heading into the third.

Quenneville’s second goal of the game and 22nd of the year came while shorthanded and proved to be the game-winner after Rio’s Danny Lapointe pulled Rio within one late in the third.

The Bees travel to Laredo on Friday to wrap a five-game road swing before returning to the Dodge Arena on Saturday.

It was a great run…. if anyone said last Monday ‘Will you be happy to win 3 of 4 this week? ‘ who among us would have no. We may be disappointed today while outshooting the Rayz but all in all it was a great week - ” Hell Yeah”.

Glad to have the commentary and video up here in the still frozen Canadian north. Jumping up and down after every Bee penalty while the Rayz seemed to be ‘exempt’ helped keep me warm. haha

What an amazing week. Congrats to all BEE players, coaches, equipment guys, trainers, play by play guy, and fans!! Hope we can have another away win Friday, lets keep the momentum going 3 out of 4 ain’t bad but beating Laredo and making it 4 out of 5 would be better. Good job boys. Safe drive home :)
