BEES EDGE BATS 3-2

By admin | March 1, 2008

Austin, Texas — The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees won their third game in a row with a 3-2 victory over the Austin Ice Bats Saturday at Chaparral Ice. Rio had not won three games in a row since November.

Rio took a 1-0 lead into the second period on Mike Tuomi’s ninth goal of the year, the upped the lead to 3-0 on second period markers by Travis Banga (22) and Dennis Maxwell (11). Maxwell, who had the overtime game-winner Friday in Corpus Christi, stepped out of the penalty box and took and corralled an errant Austin pass to move in alone on Miguel Beaudry at 19:56 of the second.

AJ Bucchino appeared to be on his way to his first CHL shutout until the 18:01 mark of the third when RG Flath sent a wrist shot past the rookie netminder for his 12th goal of the year. Austin scored 1:01 later with Jamie Thompson potting his 13th of the season with the extra attacker on.

Bucchino and the Bees weathered the final 59 seconds to improve to 14-32-7 (35 pts). They close out a three-in-three weekend Sunday at Corpus Christi. Game time is set for a 3:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on KURV 710 Talk Radio and online at both killerbeehockey.com and the CHL Network.

Super game Saturday night! It’s nice to see the Beez playing with fire and passion on a consistent level. I did get a little nervous though when Bats scored quickly late in the third, my first thought was “OH FUDGE”. I think alot of the fans thought the same since we’ve been snake-bit much of the season. Speaking of Snake-Bit, it was nice to hear Robin sharing the mic with you, but I missed why he was out of the game.

A sidebar, I applaude you for your candid conversation with Mr. Nelson on possible cheating going on in the CHL, if in fact it is happening. Now, I believe, those teams that are possibly cheating are aware that it’s something that’s quietly being talked about, if in fact it is happening, and if it’s being talked about, it might rattle them a little, the thought of being nailed for it may discourage cheating, if in fact it is happening, maybe I’m being optimistic and naive, but this may be the first step in the right direction where finally the league will look into this a little more aggresively, if in fact cheating is going on. (wink wink)
