MAXWELL SCORES OT WINNER AS BEES EDGE RAYZ

Corpus Christi, Texas — Dennis Maxwell’s goal 38 seconds into overtime boosted the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees to their second consecutive win 5-4 over the Rayz Friday at American Bank Center. 

AJ Bucchino made 36 saves on goal in his second CHL win while Travis Banga added a goal and an assist. Joe Blaznek scored twice for the Rayz. Jason Tapp made 29 saves in the loss.

The Bees took a 2-1 lead into the second period on goals by Mike Tuomi and Travis Banga, but fell behind 3-2 after second period goals by Joe Blaznek and Geno Parrish. Parrish’s goal came on a 5-on-3 power play. 

Rio tied it on Tuomi’s second goal of the night at 5:38 of the third, but Blaznek responded with his second of the night and 20th of the season at 8:06. The Bees answered just 46 seconds later on a 35-foot blast by Jason Weitzel. 

Maxwell’s power-play winner was Rio’s first OT win since a 2-1 decision at Odessa on Feb. 23, 2007.

The Bees (13-32-7, 33 pts.) travel to Austin on Saturday to face the Ice Bats at 7:35 p.m.

    What was with the ref tonight in the 1st two periods? He was calling penalties like he had a Bee under his cap.

    I know my BP was rising but I have to commend the team for not letting their frustration show. I think I would have ‘ lost it’ and I was not even onthe ice.

    A great win…………………… we are on a roll.

    What an amazing game, we had great goal-tending (good job AJ), great defense (how many 5 on 3’s did we have to kill), great goal scoring (congrats to Maxwell for getting the game winner), and great coaching (thanks coaches for not losing it when the Refs made some BAD calls). It’s finally coming all together (I think it’s going to be a great end to a crazy season). Congrats to all the players and coaches on two games very well done. To add to the greatness, great job last night Rich, I have to say I love listening to you! (you have such Passion)
