BUCKS TOP BEES 3-1

By admin | February 24, 2008

By: Rachel Reida

Hidalgo, Texas—Three different Laredo Buck skaters notched a goal with Matt Summers coming away with the game winner as the Bucks defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 3-1 in front of a sold out crowd Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. It is the ninth time in ten games that the Bucks have defeated the Bees thus far this season.

Rio started things off late in the first period when Rob Voltera, at the 15:48 mark netted a power play goal with helpers coming from Josh Garbutt and Travis Banga to give the Bees the 1-0 lead going into the second period.

Laredo’s David Walker, with help from Adam Rivet and Andrew Desjardins at 13:42 in the second tied things up to go into the final period.

Laredo came out firing just 44 seconds into the third with Matt Summers striking first with the game winner and just 35 seconds later it was Jeff Bes giving the Bucks the two goal lead and eventual win 3-1.

Dustin Traylen picked up his 20th win in net with 27 saves, while A.J. Bucchino suffered the loss with 30 saves.

COACH FIXTER SOUNDBITES

What happened in the third period?

“Well when you are playing a top team like that they find another notch, they turn it up. They came out strong. I thought there were a little bit of unfortunate goals, the second goal and the rebound it was a little unfortunate, and the third goal. They are a skilled team and made a nice play. That’s the way they are they come at you in droves and that is why I called the timeout, to try and slow it down a bit. Their a top team and they showed it. We played them as well as we can and for that I am very proud of our team tonight.”

On how Laredo was skating for the first two periods…

“Well they maybe weren’t skating like they usually do, but we were. We nullified their speed to a certain extent we were very committed to our system and what we had to do. We were tenacious and took them off their game a little bit. We came out ready to play and played hard so that slowed them down a bit. They have that extra gear and they found it in the third period.”

Do you feel the team gave up or had any breakdowns after the third goal in the third?

” No absolutely not. I don’t think we gave up at all. That’s why I called the time out and I think, no I know we were deserving of a better fate tonight, but you have to go earn it and we didn’t quite earn it because we gave up those two goals. We didn’t quit and that was what the challenge was when I called the timeout. I told them to keep going and who knows what will happen. I feel a little bit better knowing that they played their (butts) off tonight.”

Yup coach the team did play hard. Finally a positive response from the coach to his players. Something that has been missing all year long. Other than the stellar play from the team not much else to say other than the coach facing the mirror and asking himself if what he has done this year (especially since just before Christmas) all he has to offer because I firmly believe his system of play and player roles have not worked and he fails to realize that a change should have happened. There are so many details that can be critiqued and corrected. I just haven’t seen that. It remains my way or the hi-way. Bit of a waste when your ego gets in the way…..ah I’m just peed off with the whole situation. I felt sorry for the coach, but now I really feel sorry for the few players who have been on board but have gained no rewards or got shafted by the coach…….Good effort tonight fella’s. If only your team system/team work/play making confidence was coached since November the season would have been a total different outcome… imo

I thought the team played well tonight as well.
After those two quick goals in the 3rd period I thought the flood gates would open as they would have the wind out of their sales……… I was wrong.

They fought hard the rest of the period.

    Good game……….

im gald to see voltera come alive. I know he is the captain and tries to set an example for the rest of the guys, but when he goes out and plays the way voltera can he is much better, he is a physical guy and when he tones it down he just is not as effective. Good job guys!!! like alot of us have said we dont mind losing when they leave everything on the ice and i believe they did. Congrats
