BATS 5, BEES 1

Austin, Texas — The Austin Ice Bats rolled to a 5-1 win over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Thursday night at the Chaparral Ice Arena in Austin. Brendan Cook led the way for the Bats with two goals.

The Bats took a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by R.G. Flath and Cook, then made it a 3-0 game at the 3:54 mark of the second on Ted Vandermeer’s 13th goal.

Rio’s Danny Lapointe broke Miguel Beaudry’s shutout bid with his sixth goal of the season at 9:53, but the Bats responded just 21 seconds later to regain the three-goal advantage on Cook’s second of the night and 22nd of the year. Kurtis Kisio added a goal at 11:45.

Dave Lemanowicz made 33 saves in the loss. He was pulled in favor of AJ Bucchino after Austin’s fourth goal, but re-entered the game to start the third period. Bucchino made two saves on three shots in 9:46 of action in the third.

The Bees and Bats play the second half of a home-and-home Friday night at Dodge Arena. Game time is set for 7:35 p.m. The first 5000 fans will receive a 2007-08 Killer Bees team poster.
