BUCKS STOMP BEES 4-1

By admin | February 17, 2008

By:Rachel Reida

Hidalgo, Texas — Matt Summers nabbed the game-winner nearing the end of the first period en route to a 4-1 Laredo Buck defeat of the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. Travis Banga picked up the lone goal for the Bees at the 13:00 mark giving him his 19th of the season.

It was all Bucks in the first period, with Derek Legault striking first early in the frame off a deflected Matt Summers shot by Rio net minder A.J. Bucchino at 3:18. Summers bagged his game-winner on the power play with just 2:30 left on the clock to put Laredo up 2-0.

Laredo’s Paul Elliot advanced the lead by three at 6:15, with Banga picking up the lone Bee goal just 45 seconds later, with helpers coming from Mark O’Leary and Rob Voltera bringing the Bees within two.

Jeff Bes, however, sealed the Bees’ fate at 11:31 when he intercepted a pass from Bernie Chmiel giving him the one-on-one with Bucchino and beating him stick side to give Laredo their final goal of the night and the win 4-1.

Dustin Traylen picked up the win in net with 31 saves, while Bucchino suffered the loss on his first home appearance with 28 saves.

The Bees play a double-header at home next weekend, taking on the Austin Ice Bats Friday night and then once again facing the Laredo Bucks Saturday. Game time for both contests set for 7:35 p.m.

NOTES

-On a lighter note, the Bees were dead even in shots with the Bucks after being outshot in 40 out of 46 games.

- Rio was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Laredo was able to score once ending the night 1-for-3.

COACH FIXTER SOUNDBITES

What kind of momentum change was there tonight compared to last night?

Urgency. We didn’t have the same urgency to compete. Last night we came out with guns a blazing, fire in our eyes and in our belly. Tonight…not so much.

What is it going to take for this team to make consecutive wins?

Consecutive efforts. What we did last night we needed to do tonight. I don’t care if your playing a perceived better club than Austin. Austin is a hockey club, they put their skates and pants on the same way Laredo does.

Do you think it would have mattered if we were playing a different team tonight?

Nope. Nope. I don’t think so.

I think A.J. did a good job in the net(even thought it was only his third time there)but, if the defense had been there to help out couple of the shots wouldn’t gotten in and the one shot that was help in by the defense was one of freak things it happens even in the NHL. The one on one shot was a good placed shot just wish our all of our guy on offensive could place shots like that. Not just one or two of them. The good thing the game was not a runaway and we were even in shots on goal.

Why was bigsnake not playing? you would think we would want our tough guy to play against our biggest rivals. Banga gets hit in the face and nobody goes to step in… Awful!

Robin has been day-to-day with an “upper body injury.” RB

Well, it is back to the same story we have seen, heard, and lived all season long. It is getting very frustrating and hopless to see the bees lose game after game and yet having the coach always saying is the players fault because they weren’t focused, don’t have blood flowing thru their veins, don’t have the guns or fire to battle during each game. The section where me and my family seat, along with other season ticket holders wonder is who tells the coach about his work? We all wonder if the previous coach and the players would of stayed, before they all got fired, traded or let go, would the killer bees be really KILLERS?????? It is just a thought of concern since we are winding down the season, to renew our family outing or seek somewhere else for further enterteintment? How ever, we all are proud to be part of the bees. go bees go!
