BUCKS DOUBLE UP BEES

By admin | February 12, 2008

By: Rachel Reida

Hidalgo, Texas—Jeff Bes (2-1-3) led the way for the Laredo Bucks with three points as well as the game-winner to defeat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 4-2 Tuesday night at the Dodge Arena. Laredo snapped a three game winless skid (0-2-1), while Rio remains winless in their last six (0-5-1).

Picking up his first goal in a Bucks jersey and 14th of the season at the 2:32 mark in the first period was Alex Goupil with a helper coming from Igor Ararunov to give Laredo the early lead 1-0 going into the second.

Bes picked up two quick goals, including the game-winner in the second, one on the power play at 2:44 and the second at 4:13 to advance the Bucks lead 3-0.

Rio veteran skater Rob Voltera put the Bees within two notching his 22nd of the season with just 3:58 left in the second on a shorthanded shot past Bucks netminder John Ceci to end the period 3-1 in favor of Laredo.

Midway through the final period Andrew Desjardins advanced Laredo by three once again, while Travis Banga scored once more at 14:38 for Rio, which wasn’t enough as the Laredo Bucks defeated the Killer Bees for the seventh time this season with a final of 4-2.

Ceci picked up the win in net with 28 saves, while David Lemanowicz suffered the loss with 32 saves.

The Bees are off to Austin to battle the Ice Bats Friday night at Chaparral Ice Center and return home Saturday to face the Laredo Bucks once more to close out the weekend at the Dodge Arena.

COACH FIXTER SOUNDBITES
What were some things that the Bees didn’t do to dominate a tired, three game losing streak Laredo Buck team?
“The best way to say it is we didn’t play badly tonight but we didn’t play well either. We just played vanilla. We didn’t take advantage of a team that was beatable tonight. Not having James Heibert in the lineup was a big loss for them and we just didn’t have enough urgency in all facets of our game.”

What things do we need to work on to face an Austin team who has been playing very well as well as facing Laredo once again this weekend?
“We have to get urgency in all aspects and that includes the urgency to score goals. To bow in front of the net and score goals. To be committed to not giving second and third chances like the Andrew Desjardins goal. Staying out of the penalty box, and not committing stupid penalties. Our penalties killed us tonight. Look at the Jeff Bes goal, it was a bad penalty, and I admit that. We need great saves from our goaltender at important parts of the game. The first goal tonight was the second shot of the game and I didn’t think it was a good goal. We need to get better in all aspects in order to beat Austin.”

What impact do you think the addition of Jason Weitzel will have on the team?
“From all reports he is an offensive guy and that is what we are lacking; scoring. He is a centerman so he will help down the middle. I am looking for him to come in here and put up some offensive numbers to help us. In talking to him he is quite excited to be leading a team who is in the playoffs, to help a team who isn’t in the playoffs. What I liked about him is the fact that he is excited to come even though we aren’t in the playoffs so that’s good.”

Lemanowicz has been in the net a lot this season and is starting to look tired, can we expect Bucchino to be in there anytime soon?
”He will get some games. A.J. has played two games for us and has played really well. He has played six periods of hockey and has played five solid periods outside of the first period in Colorado he has played a good stretch of hockey for us. Quite honestly it was a coin toss for me tonight in which goalie I was going to out in.”
