RAGE DEFEAT BEES 5-3

By: Rachel ReidaHidalgo, Texas—The Rocky Mountain Rage notched five unanswered goals between the first two periods en route to a 5-3 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. Rio ventured a comeback with three unanswered goals in the third, but fell short in front of the 5,005 in attendance.
The Rage were on fire posting two goals in the first period, the first by Colt King at 7:46 on a power play with the helpers coming from Matt Frick and Simon Watson. With just 59seconds left on the clock, Chip Dunleavy netted one to advance the Rage lead by two.
Rio started the second period with a 5-on-3 advantage, but could not convert giving up a Daymen Rycroft shorthanded goal at 3:59 into the second. Rycroft connected once more for his second on the night at 8:02 on the power play, while Tyler Butler followed in his footsteps getting the power play goal at 14:25 to give Rocky Mountain the 5-0 lead going into the final period.
Rio’s Robin Big Snake, along with Rocky Mountain’s Jeff Hansen started out the third with a fight the seemed to spark the Bees for they posted two goals in 29 seconds to start out the period. The first by veteran skater Rob Voltera just 31 seconds into the frame, and the next one at the 1:00 mark by newcomer Bernie Chmiel. Rio’s Travis Banga scored once more at 18:52, but it was no match for the Rage as they came away with the win.
Terry Dunbar picked up his 8th win of the season with 23 saves, while David Lemanowicz who once again faced more shots than his opponent, suffered the loss with 31 saves.
The Bees take on the road again as they travel to Tulsa to face the Oilers Friday February 8th, and then off to Wichita to face the Thunder Saturday. Both games will be broadcast on KURV with Rich Bocchini, voice of the Killer Bees, to commentate.
NOTES
- For the 37th time this season, Rio was outshot 36-26.
- Rocky Mountain was 3-for-5 on the power play, while holding Rio 0-for-6 tonight.
- Travis Banga continues his ranking in the asssits department posting one more tonight as well as a goal late in the game.
- Bernie Chmiel picked up a goal in tonight match-up, his fifth in as many games.
- Trevor Weisgerber, Nathan Rosychuck and Clay Plume, all former Bees skaters each had a point tonight, while Daymen Rycroft, also a former Bee came away with two, both being goals.
