OILERS OVERCOME BEES 3-2 IN SHOOTOUT

By admin | February 1, 2008

By: Rachel Reida

Hidalgo, Texas—Jeff Christian nabbed the game-winner in the shootout for the Tulsa Oilers as they defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 3-2 Friday night at the Dodge Arena.

Rio came back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period with Bernie Chmiel, in his Bees home debut, posting both Rio goals at the 4:37 and 13:06 marks to force overtime and eventual shootout.

The game was scoreless until the second period, when Tulsa’s Paul Kelly netted one on a pass from David Beauregard just 1:17 into the second frame to give the Oilers the lead 1-0 going into the final period.

Brendon Hodge increased Tulsa’s lead to 2-0 just 43 second into the third.

In the battle of the goaltenders, former Bee Jeff Van Nynatten made 28 saves in thr win while Dave Lemanowicz had yet another stellar defensive performance with 52 stops.

The Bees take on the Rocky Mountain Rage Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. Game time is set for 7:35 p.m. The first 1,000 fans receive fleece blankets.

NOTES

COACH FIXTER SOUNDBITES

On the play of David Lemanowicz:

“He did very good for three periods, and then in the shootout he wasn’t.”

Discussion that took place in the second intermission to bring up intensity level in the third?:

“Reality check, wake up call. The effort was unexceptable, it was a joke. People pay to watch this and they deserve effort and we didn’t have any effort for two periods.”

Any strategy change when you realized Van Nynatten was in net:

“No, we should have generated more shots in the first two periods. We didn’t test him, but we know how to shoot at him.”

Being outshot by such a substantial amount:

“I’m disappointed. Only one word can describe my feeling after that game and it’s disappointment. I am so disgusted, disappointed and upset with that hockey club right now.”

Preparations for tomorrow’s big game and big rematch:

“I know how they are gonna play. There going to come at us hard, and they lost tonight so they are gonna be ready to win. Their coach used to coach here and he wants to make a statement to everyone here. If our hockey club isn’t ready they don’t have blood flowing through their veins.”

FORMER BEES GOALTENDER JEFF VAN NYNATTEN

How does it feel being home?

“I have a new home now, but it’s nice to come back and get the win.”

Knowing how most of the players on this team play, did that become an advantage for you?

“They found a way to get two big goals there at the end to tie things up at the end, and they did well in the shootout too, our guys just did a little better. We are on a bit of a roll right now and it’s good to be part of this team.”

Did you change your strategy at all coming into this game knowing how these guys play?

“I was confident that if we played our game we would get a lot of shots on them and we did.

David held in there as he could, but our guys came out at the end and became the better team when all was said and done.”

Thoughts about the game and being traded:

“It’s part of the business. I’ll miss the guys and the fans, but look forward to helping my new team win games.”

Was it easier to make the transition having Adam Blanchette and Mike Looby already on this team?

“Yeah I think so, plus I know another guy, Andrew Lackner who has been a good friend of mine for quite some time and it helps going somewhere where you know guys who can help you get acclimated to your new surroundings. These guys are a great group of guys and like I said I m excited to be a part of this team, especially a team who is winning some games.”

I remain speechless at how Lemanowicz keeps getting peppered with all those shots. It is unfortunate that he can play his heart out, and by the law of averages give up 4 goals on 45 shots, which % wise is good, but not good enough on a team that often doesn’t have enough offencive firepower to compensate for that. As a goalie I can relate and sometimes it helps because it keeps you in the zone (too few shots can sometime may you a tad lazy) bottom line it was a tad strange seeing so many ex Bees (VanNyt, Looby and Blanchette) on the other team. At a given time I thought I was watching a Bees scrimmage lol. Well let’s hope the guys play better tomorrow night, though I am aware that RM has a lot to play for, especially since their coach used to lead the troops down here. See you there!

I agree with you how David can play his heart out and come away with a loss. This team has to play like they did in Corpus last Saturday night for the rest of the season I know it maybe asking for the impossible but it’s always possible. The passion just wasn’t there tonight it looked like it was trying to come in the third period it showed itself
in overtime but, it was 45 mins. to late. Come on guys we know you have in you thats already been proven. Lets do it for 60 mins. Like you did in Corpus.
    “WIN BEES WIN”

As a former defenseman I was interested to note that your defensemen seemed to be skating with the charging opponent rather than trying to stop them.
Also wondered why when one bee gets the puck and is heading for the goal, they seem to go it alone. Isn’t it time for a teammate to charge down and be ready for a pass or be in front of the goalie to catch a rebound and attempt a shot.
2nd and 3rd periods the Bees seemed to come alive.
Also interesting to watch bees change a player just as the opposition is heading toward your goal. Opposition player then had a clear field.
    Love the Bees.

Wow, well on a positive note, I like our new stay at home defenseman Bernie Chmiel, he needs to stay at home more often I was looking for the hat trick last night, good job Bernie and welcome to the BEES.

Nice comments by Van Nynatten.Unlike Emond he went from Rio to a good team then to a team at the bottom of the standings and showed up to play without hesitation.I will be listening and watching tonight so good luck Bees. The Rage are an extremely quick team and shoot hard .If Reid is in net create traffic in front of him and get close to him he will wilt.If not you see ex-Bee tenders on back to back nights, how often does that happen?

why is it that we are all putting up with fixey? He is humiliating our guys, cutting them down, threatening them, and now he goes to all the medias and spits on their efforts. I don’t know if he was told to attend the banquet of the fellowship of christian athletes, but he needed to go and learn a few things from the kids that spoke motivationally. Fixxy is immature and a very VERY unskilled coach. He couldn’t lead a dying horse to water……..and he has ruined our team by not taking responsibilities. Sure, if he has the nerve to meet with me I would love to talk to him in person.

However I would like for him to bring TN (who he keeps saying he has in his back pocket) along to hear everything I have to say about his attitude toward the fans, the owner and our players. NO, not his players, cause they can’t stand him and have no respect for him anymore after he has cut them down so much. One day sooner than you think ‘FIXEY’ it’s all gonna’ be over and you’ll wonder why. Sit down and look at yourself in the mirror and ask why you did what you did to the fans and bees and figure it out!!!

A short note to Leslie. Get off of your pedestel and act like a coachs wife whether you like it of not. You and your family are not the right fit for here but there is nothing you can do cause fixxy is determined to ruin this club as he goes down. So you need to stay in your little cage, get boozed up and keep your mouth shut. You are obscene, obnoxious and really have no business running around trying to clean up all paul’s mistakes, cause that’ll never happen. All you do is draw attention to yourself and cause fictitious scenes. You know you were not physically touched and its all lies so give it a rest. If you didn’t go looking for trouble it wouldn’t find you. You are indicating our fans are mean and dangerous and you drug the Volts into it with Robs little speech. Pleeeeeeeezz Leslie go to a doctor and see why you are so unbalanced before you really go off on a fan and TN has to ask you to leave and not come back!
