GAME NOTES, JAN. 31
By admin | January 31, 2008
Here’s this week’s early game notes, updated player bios and full stats pack. Enjoy crunching the numbers.
Make sure you show up early this weekend if you want to get the giveaway items; T-shirts on Friday and fleece blankets on Saturday. They’ll go quick.
- Brian Sandalow tells me he has an interesting story for Friday’s Monitor that includes a chat with Rocky Mountain Rage head coach Tracy Egeland. He’s already posted a snippet.
- Make sure to smile Saturday night…the game’s on TV (XERV-9, cable 19).
- Once again, the fans in Laredo show why they’re the class of the league. I have to disagree with Greg on this; I don’t recall Brian Leetch getting booed when he returned to Madison Square Garden in a Bruins uniform (not sure if he made it back to the Garden during his brief time with Toronto). I remember being at a Whalers game after Brendan Shanahan said he didn’t want to play in Hartford anymore; the fans booed every time he touched the puck. I understand that. But booing a guy who was a big part of two championship teams shows why A) some Laredo fans seemingly have their heads tucked firmly up their backsides and B) hockey in Laredo might not be there in five years if they keep crap like that up.
- Given all the bush-league antics they put up on the video boards in Laredo, I guess it doesn’t surprise me the fans act like that. I’m all for poking fun and everything, but some of that stuff is ridiculous. I’ll never forget the time they put on the video board, Where’s the worst place in the world to live? A) Iraq B) Sudan C) Rio Grande Valley. Pure class.
- The powers that be in the AHL are finally discussing shortening the schedule. The NHL should think about the same. I’ve always said the CHL has the right length of schedule…Seriously, very few teams draw well during the week and all it does is cost everyone money. Bill Ballou, the excellent IceCats/Sharks and Red Sox beat writer for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, always said you could cut those Wednesday and Sunday games and still draw the same amount of fans overall because you’d funnel the groups to the Friday or Saturday game. It makes perfect sense.
- I added Adam Dunivan’s blog to the site…he’s the beat writer for the Reporter Herald and covers the Eagles.
