About Me

Rich Bocchini is the Broadcaster and Media Relations Director for the Killer Bees. Now in his third season with the team, he'll try to keep you up to date with an inside look at the team from a PR standpoint without getting himself in hot water with the coaching staff.

VOLTERA’S FOUR-POINT NIGHT HELPS BEES END SKID

By admin | January 27, 2008

Corpus Christi — Travis Banga’s goal at 11:28 of the third period stood up as the game-winner as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees ended an 0-8-1 skid with a 6-4 victory over the Corpus Christi Rayz at the American Bank Center. Rob Voltera contributed with a four-point effort (2-2-4) while David Lemanowicz turned aside 36 shots.

Rio opened up a 3-1 lead on first period goals by Banga, Danny Lapointe and Bernie Chmiel. Voltera set up both Banga and Lapointe, who scored 39 seconds apart at 9:05 and 9:44. Brent Howarth’s power play tally cut Rio’s 2-0 lead in half at 15:45, but Chmiel responded just 30 seconds later to regain Rio’s two-goal advantage.

Corpus Christi converted on their fourth power play with Nick Lindberg’s sixth goal of the year at 13:11 of the second period to make it a 3-2 game. Then, Joe Blaznek knotted things up on a 3-on-1 at 17:30. Jon Jankus stole the puck at center ice, angled down the left wing on a 2-on-1 and found the late-trailing Blaznek who buried it for his 13th goal of the season.

The Rayz took their only lead of the game 5:19 into the third period on Jay Latulippe’s seventh goal of the year. But Rio responded with three consecutive goals by Voltera, Banga and Voltera again. Voltera tied things up at 10:26, then Banga banged home the eventual game-winner at 11:2. Voltera sealed the win with a breakaway wrister at 18:40.

Jason Tapp made 22 saves in the loss for the Rayz.

The Bees wrap up a six-game road trip on Sunday with a 4:05 p.m. game at Bossier-Shreveport. Broadcast time on KURV 710 Talk Radio is 3:50 p.m.

I guess we will hold off on the wholesale trades, (vets), for the time being. The old guys played great, “and that my man”, (as Bocchini would say), has been lacking during the recent losing streak. Good on them, in particular, Voltera. This in my opinion has been the problem for a long time. Finally, he is playing the way a captain should be playing. You can’t expect rookies like Bonar to keep the goals coming, who is in a bit of a slump at the moment.

The forwards did a good job with supporting the neutral to blueline area tonight. A huge help for the dmen. Good to see MacNeil out there helping the troops. Made a couple of errors but he wasn’t the only one. Shots were still a bit high, (40), but most, from the vantage point of my computer, were low percentage opportunities.

Still some things, that in my opinion, are still a concern, in regard to the teams success, is the Big Snake factor. The coach seems to think he is a number 1 power play expert/talent/specialist. That is a bit of a stretch and a waste of an opportunity to increase the PP scoring percentage. He is a role player and always has been. Everyone knows the role, so why is the coach thinking differently? Its not an unknown fact if you have done your homework. (OK, couldn’t resist being a slight bit negative, sorry).

Good Luck in Shreveport Saturday. Go Bees Go!

GO BEES GO!!!! its been a long time coming, thankfully it came around at the perfect time! great job to voltera and lemanowicz, thats my power team by the way! i know the bees dont have a close to perfect track record, but this is a team thats improving as the games pass, win or lose, and they seem to be learning from what works best for them and what doesnt. in the past few weeks, we’ve experienced some trades that were not fair, and some that were, the best thing to come out of these trades is that the team supports the new players and they “feed” off each other from there weaknesses and there strengths. once again, great job!! cant wait till you guys come home on the 1st…GO BEES GO!!!!
