About Me

Rich Bocchini is the Broadcaster and Media Relations Director for the Killer Bees. Now in his third season with the team, he'll try to keep you up to date with an inside look at the team from a PR standpoint without getting himself in hot water with the coaching staff.

RECRUITING

By admin | January 25, 2008

While recruiting and trade, trade, trades, are the hot topic for Bees fans these days, I’d like to point out a development coming from the far flung outpost of Dayton and former CHL/WPHL Championship-winning coach Bill McDonald.

http://www.daytondailynews.com

I don’t blindly support a coach or the decisions he makes. If I second-guess something he does, I don’t post about it. I will go on record as saying I support every move that the team has made. Some for on the ice reasons, some for off. Coach Fixter is as good of a hockey guy as you can get. Some people will poke fun that he was the “video guy” for the Avalanche, but I’ll bet you that the players and staff who have two Stanley Cup rings will tell you his hard work behind the scenes was a big part of their success.

You can call me a suck-up or whatever, but the fact is I call it as I see it. The team lets me post just about whatever I want and I can’t thank them enough for that. That said, I’ll never blast the coach or the team for moves that are made. I know who signs my checks and who I have to ride the bus with. But with that comes something else; If I thought the team was making a bad move, I wouldn’t post positive comments about it. I just wouldn’t say anything.

Now, some of you are saying, “you’re just the radio guy.” Sure enough I am. I don’t pretend to be anything more. I am a fan who gets to announce the game on the radio. With that come with an inside perspective that I feel blessed to have. So I know what different guys bring to the table, good and bad. I know what guys care about playing and what guys are more concerned about where the next pre-game meal is coming from. Being around this silly business as long as I’ve been, I also think I have a decent eye for who can play and who can’t. So with all that, my synopsis is that the current Killer Bees team is a talented bunch individually. I wish, like most of you, that they could put it together as a team.

Sometimes the things I see in the emails I get at radio@killerbeehockey.com and the stuff I see on the message board blows my mind. It’s like the sterotypical stuff you see in movies with bricks being thrown through the window of the coach’s house.

My point is that while this hasn’t been a fun season on the ice so far, it isn’t for a lack of trying to get better. Some of the off season recruits have not worked out, while other guys decided to play elsewhere for their own reasons. The team - coaches, players, staff - are doing everything they can to make things perfect, and we all appreciate the support.

I believe the fans give the team their time, love, and dedication, but on the other hand the hockey team was put here to win games. Many fans are angry because they know things can be shaken up more than what it has been. Fans don’t deserve to be satisfied with hard working players if at the end it resolves in a L. We need more W then L

rich you make great points. i dont expect you to bash the team even if they deserve it sometimes, if for nothing else simply respect. As for the rest of us i to believe it has gotten a little out of hand, as a fan it is tough to watch what is going on when you really want the team to do well and sometimes we over step our bounds by saying things before we have all the right information. For that i apologize for my acctions in that dept. I believe in the organazation and i know things will get better. It is just very hard knowing the talent we have and not seeing it work out .

Yes, Rich you hit the nail right on the head. As you reminded me this is not the NHL. How anybody argue about a coach who has two Stanley Cup rings is “NUTS”. I know the team is trying Hard to win the games but, to win you have to have the passion to win. It just seems like the passion has been missing in action. People may not agree with the coach but who can argue with a man who has lifted the Stanley Cup
twice. The last two game in Colorado were some of the best I have seen them play even though they were losses they played there hearts out. If they can take that passion into the next two road game we stand a good chance to win the
games. Anybody who calls you a “suck up” is just as nuts. I think you call the games the way you see them and when they play bad you say that too. I do know you have to walk a tightrope being the “PR GUY” for the team. Some people just don’t understand that you have to walk that tightrope from time to time. Since I have been back in the valley I have notice everybody seems to think when a team plays bad the coach has got to be bad you see this from high school football to all pro sports. At this point in the hockey season lets keep the passion going for the KILLER BEES and to support the guys on team and the coaching staff for rest of this season win or lose. “WIN BEES WIN”

Sorry Rich, but enough with the hugs and kisses. I agree 100%, the coach is not the problem no matter what anyone says. I may not agree with some of the line combo’s, but who am I, I’m just a fan.

I still think, not all that can be done has been done. We are still 2 dmen short of a winning team.

My comments at times may not seem in support of this team, but I can assure you that I do support this team WIN or LOSE. I just may say some things at times that appear or is misunderstood to differ.

    Forever, Go Bees Go!

Never say “I’m just a fan.” Fans (i.e. YOU) are why we are having this discourse in the first place…if there’s no fans there’s no team. As far as hugs and kisses, I’m not sure what you’re referring to. The team may or may not be 2 d-men short of becoming a winning team, but my only question is where do you get them from? Even if someone was willing to move some D-men, who do you give up? RB

    Rich

“Where do you get them from?” I’m sure the organization has looked around, but I see dmen being released/waived from the ECHL and AHL ranks daily. Sure they get try outs elsewhere, to be released again. Why not open a revolving door for tryouts from players being released from other leagues. If they are not better than what we have, then release them. I bet you would find some that would stick.

Obviously by trade would be best, but as you say, “who do you give up?” I won’t mention names, but we have one or two forwards who could bring some interest (role types) and wouldn’t affect our offensive threat, packaged with a couple of dmen that are expendable, could bring one or two pretty decent dmen. The forward player(s) could be replaced for a futures.

There are or have been many CIS players who didn’t make the grade after 1st term. I hope our staff had a look at that. There have been a few signings from the CIS since after Christmas by other teams. Why didn’t we pick up some of those types.

Man, Laredo, Oklahoma and Youngstown made several changes defensively along with some forward trades and pick ups. Unless Mc Vicar is a NHL signed affiliate of some sort why wasn’t he picked up. We were looking for a goalie. Beech is another goalie who was available.

Anyway, if things don’t turn around in the next couple of weeks, I would start a movement towards major youth similar to Arizona, to build for the future. That would mean unloading some vets.
