VOLTERA SCORES TWICE IN 7-5 LOSS

By admin | January 24, 2008

Loveland, Colo. — Riley Nelson led the way for the Colorado Eagles with a four-point night as the Eagles edged the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 7-5 Wednesday night at the Budweiser Events Center. Rob Voltera led the Bees with two goals and a helper and now has points in five straight games.

Voltera gave Rio the lead 8:29 into the first, marking the second night in a row he opened the scoring. The Eagles answered back to take a 4-1 lead into the middle stanza on goals by Dave Iannzzo, Ed McGrane, Les Borsheim and Riley Nelson.

Rio chipped away in the second period, starting with Bernie Chmiel’s first goal just 13 seconds in. The goal was the fastest into a period ever allowed by the Eagles. Erik Adams regained Colorado’s three-goal advantage with his first goal of the season at 2:58 on a shot deflected in front and past Bees goalie AJ Bucchino, who made 37 saves in his first CHL start.

But Rio continued to battle, scoring two power play goals in the next 14 minutes to make it a one goal game.  The first goal came at 6:38 when Voltera’s shot from the left circle slipped through Marco Emond. Josh Garbutt followed that up at 11:54, cashing in on an Emond giveaway to the right of his own net.  Emond was able to scramble back into position in time to stop the initial shot from Lance Herauf, but the rebound shot back into the high slot where Garbutt beat Emond to bring Rio with a goal.

Mike Lukajic bagged the eventual game-winner at 3:15 of the third after Nelson dug the puck out along the right-wing boards, skated into the faceoff circle and passed to Lukajic who one-timed the puck past Bucchino from the opposite circle.  Lance Herauf again brought Rio with in a goal 2:15 later after a Rio dump-in squirted in front as Emond went behind the goal to play it. But Nelson closed out the scoring and regained the two-goal lead for the Eagles at 8:30 of the third.

Emond earned the win with 32 saves.

The Bees are now winless in nine games (0-8-1) as they get set to travel to Corpus Christ on Saturday for an 8:00 p.m. face off against the Rayz. Broadcast time on KURV 710 Talk Radio is 7:50 p.m.

The Bees played a very good against the Eagles even thought they lost the game. If they played as good as they did the last two nights we should be able to beat Corpus and the Mudbugs and possibly win as many as we can to get to the playoffs. WIN BEES WIN!!!!!!!
