GORILLAS SLIP PAST BEES 5-3

By admin | January 20, 2008

Amarillo, Texas — Bill Vandermeer led the Amarillo Gorillas with a goal and two helpers in Saturday night’s 5-3 win over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at the Cal Farley Coliseum.

The Gorillas snap a four-game losing streak while Rio’s winless skid extends to seven (0-3-1). Travis Banga scored twice for the Bees, with both goals coming via the power play. Lance Herauf scored Rio’s other goal.

Amarillo battled back from a pair of one-goal deficits before taking the lead for good off Vandermeer’s goal at 9:12 of the second period. The Apes scored a shorthanded tally 1:18 into the third to cushion the lead. The clubs combined for five power play goals with Amarillo going 3-for-14 and Rio going 2-for-8.

Amarillo out-shot the Bees 64-31 with an alleged 30 shots credited in the first period. Dave Lemanowicz set a regular season franchise record and tied an overall franchise mark by making 59 saves in the loss. Dan Bauer earned the win with 28 saves.

The Bees travel to Colorado to face the Rocky Mountain Rage on Tuesday and the Colorado Eagles on Wednesday. Both games will be broadcast live on KURV 710 Talk Radio beginning at 7:50 p.m.
