Hidalgo, Texas—Led by Tyler Redenbach’s (2-1-3) three points and Tyler Liebel’s empty net game-winner the Arizona Sundogs were able to hold on to defeat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 6-5 Tuesday night at the Dodge Arena.

Josh Bonar (3-0-3) picked up his first professional hat trick in the contest while veteran skater Rob Voltera (0-3-3) posted three assists.

Arizona’s Redenbach put the Sundogs on the board early in the first at 4:41 on a rebound shot from the right side of Rio netminder David Lemanowicz, but Rio fired back at 7:46 when Bonar picked up his first to tie things up 1-1. Arizona posted a power play goal midway through the period by Jon Landry to give them the lead 2-1 going into the second.

The teams combined for five goals in the second period, with Arizona gaining leads of 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3, with Rio answering back after each.

Redenbach scored his second of the night on a 5-on-3 power play with helpers from Alex Leavitt and Dan Laperriere just 42 seconds in, but once again Rio fired back at the 4:29 mark with Travis Banga redirected a Voltera pass for his 10th goal of the season. The Sundogs scored two more times in the middle stanza, including a short-hander at 13:14. Rio’s Bonar and Voltera took advantage of a 2-on-1 at 17:22 to narrow the gap 5-3 going into the last period.

Bonar picked up his final goal of the night and the hat trick just 24 seconds into the third to put to Bees within one, but with just 20 seconds left on the clock Liebel picked up the empty-net game-winner with the helper from Oliver Latendresse. The scoring didn’t end there; Rio again made it a one-goal game with 6.9 seconds left from on Mark O’Leary’s fifth.

Rio outshot the Sundogs 18-10 in the third and for a time in third held a 14-4 advantage.

Bill Zaniboni captured the win in net with 31 saves, while David Lemanowicz suffered the loss ending his night with 36 saves.

The Bees play back-to-back games at the Dodge Arena this weekend facing Bossier-Shreveport Friday night and New Mexico on Saturday. Game times are set for 7:35 p.m.
