BEES END SKID; UPSET BUCKS 3-2

By admin | January 4, 2008

By: Rachel Reida

Hidalgo, Texas—Led by the stellar play of goaltender David Lemanowicz and Lance Herauf’s two goals the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees upset the Laredo Bucks 3-2 Friday night at the Dodge Arena. Rio battled back from a 2-0 deficit to notch three consecutive goals midway through the second to end their eight game winless streak with the win.

All the scoring took place in the second period with Laredo’s James Hiebert connecting early at the 1:12 mark and shortly after was Jeff Bes picking up his 21st goal this season to put the Bucks up 2-0.

Rio came firing back notching three consecutive goals in just a little over three minutes. Herauf picked up his first of the night at the 5:39 mark, followed by Mike Tuomi at 8:29. Herauf bagged the eventual game-winner just 24 seconds later with his second of the night on a backdoor feed from Tuomi at 8:53 to give the Bees the lead 3-2. Bucks starting goaltender Kevin Beech was replaced after the third Bees goal by Dustin Traylen, but re-entered the game in the third after an injury to Traylen.

Lemanowicz picked up his fifth win with 40 saves while Beech suffered the loss with nine saves. Traylen stopped all eight Bees shot he faced.

The Bees take on the Colorado Eagles Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. The Bees will be sporting special fifth anniversary jerseys that will be auctioned off later in the night. Also taking place will be the retiring of assistant coach Sean Gilliam’s No. 7 jersey, as well as three of the five top Killer Bee fan favorites being present. Game time set for 7:35 p.m.

NOTES

·          Both teams were a combined 0-for-9 on the power play tonight.

·          Bees center Nick Warriner received a game misconduct and was pulled from the game at the 6:40 mark in the second period after he was called for boarding Bucks defenseman Serge Dube, which started one of the most aggressive fights that have taken place between the two clubs. Warriner ended his night with one assist on the Bees second goal by Tuomi.

·          Bees defense and goaltender Lemanowicz withheld a 6-on-4 Bucks advantage for 1:19 after Bees veteran Rob Voltera was called for a holding the stick penalty with 2:10 left in the game. Bucks coach Terry Ruskowski pulled goaltender Beech to give his team the two man advantage which the Bees were able to overcome.

·          Most importantly the Bees ended a eight game winless skid that started in Amarillo on December 14.

·     The Bees killed off a huge five-minute major penalty to Nick Warriner 13:20 into the second period. Warriner was called for boarding Serge Dube and received a game-misconduct. Laredo controlled the puck almost the entire five minutes but couldn’t solve Lemanowicz and the Bees defense.

COACH FIXTER SOUNDBITES

 On the win tonight:

“This was a very big win for us tonight. It was our ninth of the year and a ninth win has never felt so good. It was big for the team and it stops a streak that wasn’t a whole lot of fun. The guys have been rewarded because they have worked very hard to end this.”

What kinds of changes were made:

“We made a lot of changes and the guys are committed to what we need to do. We have made some personnel changes and some systematic changes. It comes down to the fact that you can make all the changes you want to and nothing works unless the players do, and they are changing and have been even through this streak.”

What are your expectations for this weekend after tonight’s win:

“My expectations have never changed all the way through this. My expectations always are commitment, effort and winning.”

On Lemanowicz’s play and the help of the defense:

“I thought David Lemanowicz in net tonight was outstanding! It starts with goaltending and goes from there and was very good. He’s the last line of defense and I thought our defensive group played well and I thought our forwards helped them out and that is what allows for success.”

Other thoughts:

“It was a good win and we need to go out and build on that.”

    GREAT WIN! GO BEES!
If they play again like that tonight, they should bag another win.
Rich, I started listening to you in the arena. It’s AWESOME, but sometimes and lately, most of the time the reception is horrible. Can something be done?
