GAME NOTES, DEC. 31
By admin | December 31, 2007
Happy New Year everyone.
While you sip champagne with your friends, the team will be driving back from Laredo for the second year in a row. How nice would it be to end the year with a win at the LEC?
Here’s tonight’s game notes along with the full stats pack. There’s a few scoring changes that need to go thru from the past two games, so if you’re keeping track, some of this stuff will change. Enjoy.
Minor Observations
- I’ve gotten a few emails from people asking why assists get added after the fact, goals get changed, etc. Some people have even insinuated that guys are “stealing” points from each other. Get over it already. Scoring changes happen because
- A) the ref thought one guy scored it when it was actually someone else who tipped it…
- B) the off ice officials missed an assist or mixed up a number.
- One guy even emailed me saying, and I’m paraphrasing here, “how come you and the off ice guys can’t get the goals and assists right when I can see it clear as day online?” Well, smart guy, the answer is that we’re 200 feet away from the action and we don’t have the luxury of video monitors or replay. Still, I’d say the accuracy rate is pretty high. However, I’ve always said “If the ref can’t get it right ON the ice, how are we supposed to get it right that far away?”
- The off ice officials in the CHL (and every minor league) are a dedicated bunch of volunteers who love the game. Unfortunately, in many of the buildings they are stuck in a corner which makes it tough to see the far end of the ice. I’m sure they could use some help, so if you think you’d be a good candidate, email me and I’ll put you in touch with the crew leader.
- Other emails have asked why Bill Newson’s No. 12 is not being retired, seeing as he was voted the No. 1 most popular player. The answer to that is…
- A) retiring a guy’s number is not a popularity contest.
- B) We weren’t sure if Newson was going to retire.
- C) It is customary, except in very rare cases, to wait at least a year after a guy retires to hang up his number.
- An interesting read out of Reading, PA, the home of the ECHL’s Royals. I find it funny that the GM of a team in the “Premier AA Hockey” league says the league plays too many games and should be around the 64 mark. I can think of at least one other AA league that’s been doing that for a long time.
