RAYZ 5, BEES 4

By admin | December 30, 2007

By: Rachel ReidaHidalgo, Texas—Joe Blaznek nabbed the game winner in a shootout to give the Corpus Christi Rayz a 5-4 win as they took both games over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees this weekend with the win Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. Corpus battled back from a 4-2 deficit at the start of the third period to send the game into the shootout and came away with the win. Blaznek (2-2-4) ended his night with four points and the weekend with seven (3-4-7).

Josh Bonar picked up his first of two goals on the night at the 2:29 mark in the first nabbing a rebound shot from Mark O’Leary, but Corpus left wing Adam Powell skated past Bees defenseman Jason Slusher to give him a one-on-one with goaltender David Lemanowicz coming away with the goal to tie things 1-1. Rob Voltera gave the Bees the 2-1 lead with just three minutes left in the period connecting on helpers from Dennis Maxwell and Jeremy Van Hoof on the power play.

Corpus tied things up at 2:34 into the second when Mike Tuomi his second goal of the two game series, but it was Voltera picking up his second power play goal of the night at 4:17 on a shot that slid right between Rayz netminder Jason Tapp’s legs and into the net. Bonar captured his second of the night at 6:27 giving Rio the 4-2 lead going into the final period.

The Rayz answered with two consecutive goals in the third to send the game into overtime and an eventual shootout with Blaznek nabbing the game winner to give Corpus the win and the weekend sweep.

Tapp gained yet another win with 39 saves as well as stopping all Rio’s shootout shots. Lemanowicz suffered the loss ending the night with 43 saves.

Next up the Bees will face the Laredo Bucks Friday night and the Colorado Eagles Saturday with both games at the Dodge Arena, and then they travel to face the Corpus Christi Rayz on their home turf. Game times at the Dodge Arena are 7:30 p.m.
