THE CHRISTMAS MOUSE?
By admin | December 23, 2007
Here’s tonight’s updated game notes. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1240 AM as well as online.
Well, the road trip is almost over. It’s been a long haul and it’s a shame the team couldn’t at least pull a point out of Friday’s game after the grit they showed to tie things at 6-6. A win tonight would make the 24 hour or so trek back to the Valley a lot more palatable, that’s for sure. Talking to Arizona PR guy Shane Ferraro and radio PBP counterpart Robby Incmikoski made me realize just how long of a trip it is; Shane’s from Colorado and he’ll be there by tomorrow morning. Robby is from Philadelphia and even he’ll be there before we pull into the Valley. You always try to ignore how long the rides are and just grind it out, but sheesh.
Random Thoughts from a Week in the Mountains
- Besides the obvious gloom surrounding this trip because the team hasn’t been winning, there have been a few bright spots away from the rink. Anytime you’re in a town for more than a few days you naturally get a chance to take some time to look around. Thanks to a rental car, equipment manager Doug Tretiak and I made a few trips to downtown Prescott, “Arizona’s Christmas City.” It reminds me of Glens Falls, NY. Lots of cool shops and restaurants, not to mention the sub-30 degree weather and it almost felt like home.
- According to Benny Morales, there’s a mouse living on the bus. He thinks he caught it.
- Prescott Valley, meanwhile, is where the Sundogs play and it’s a fantastic setup, similar to what I think they envisioned for the Hive and surrounding area. They basically made a “Town Center” and an “Entertainment District” in which Tim’s Toyota Center is the centerpiece. There’s a movie theater, restauarants/bars and shopping.
- Some of the guys made a trip up to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon after an 8 a.m practice on Wednesday. It was freezing and gloomy for a bit but the place is breathtaking.
- Interesting fact: we stopped at a McDonalds right outside the park and discovered everything is almost double the price from anywhere else. They had a sign mentioning the cost of deliveries and that they provide their employees with housing. No kidding.
- We also made it to a Coyotes/Canucks game (thanks Bucky and Troy!) that happened to be the late game on Hockey Night in Canada. A few of the guys are Canucks fans so they were happy to see them pull out a 2-1 shootout win. Earlier in the day Doug (our equipment manager) arranged a tour for himself, Coach Fixter, me and our two drivers to see the Coyotes locker room. It’s unbelievable - they have a doctor’s office, dentist chair, saunas and whirlpools, a lounge with computers, TV’s, XBox and a weight room bigger than most gyms you’ve ever been to. While we were down there, we saw a familiar looking guy who has his own special parking spot in the back going about his business.
- While there, we ran into Brad Treliving (former CHL prez and current Coyotes Asst. GM). Always nice to see him. I also ended up getting a look at the press box during the game and had time for a photo with these guys. Also stuck my head into the Hockey Night in Canada booth. A guy can dream, right?
- Anyhoo, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. This will be my first one in South Texas (I’ve been able to fly to see the family the last two years), so I’m interested to see what it’s like to celebrate the holiday wearing shorts.
- Besides tonight’s game recap, this will be the final blog post till at least Wednesday.
