Austin — Jamie Thompson led the way with a goal and two assists as the Austin Ice Bats defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 5-2 Saturday night at Chaparral Ice.
Austin opened up a 4-0 lead before Rio’s Lance Herauf converted on the power play with three minutes remaining in the second period. Rio’s Ladislav Kouba cut the lead in half just 1:31 into the third, but Thompson answered at 3:13 to regain the three-goal lead.
Miguel Beaudry made 33 saves for the Ice Bats while David Lemanowicz took the loss with 35 saves. It was the second night in a row Lemanowicz faced 40 shots.
The Bees drop to 8-10-3 as they prepare to visit Amarillo, New Mexico and Arizona. The Bees don’t play at home until Dec. 28 and 29.

I think its time to have a hard look at the defensive core of this team and the system the coach is using. The defense looks soft and the system being used generates very little offense. The lack of forecheck allows the other team to penetrate with ease and with a soft non physical poor containment defense is a dream for the opposing teams. Do they even practice the power play, it doesn’t look like it. The defense has no imagination on the PP. The team lacks creativity with the system they are using and the weak defense they have….just my 2 cents worth….frustration to say the least.
