Hidalgo, Texas—The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees move farther ahead in the standings after their 6-4 win over the Corpus Christi Rayz Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. Veteran Rob Voltera posted three points in the contest (1-2-3) and nabbed the game-winner at the 17:10 mark in the second period, en route to the Bees second victory in as many nights.

Dennis Maxwell posted his first goal of the night at 7:14 in the first to give the Bees the edge 1-0 going into the second. In an intense second period, both teams combined for six goals, which tied the franchise record for most goals in one period. Four individual Bee skaters posted goals, while Jon Jankus  and Kevin Watters notched power play goals for Corpus Christi to end the second with Rio on top 5-2.

Maxwell added his second goal at 6:24 in the final period ending the scoring for the Bees. Corpus battled back posting two goals within one minute of each other, but just couldn’t withstand netminder Jeff Van Nynatten and the Rio defense with the final score of 6-4 in favor of the Bees.

Van Nynatten picked up his second win in as many nights with 40 saves on 44 shots taken, while Jason Tapp suffered the loss in net for Corpus ending his night with 19 saves on 25 shots.

Next up the Bees will face New Mexico Wednesday night at the Dodge Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

NOTES

-Veterans Dennis Maxwell, David Masse, and Rob Voltera each had three points in tonight’s contest. Maxwell posted two goals and one assist, while Voltera and Masse each skated away with one goal and two assists a piece.

-Newcomer Lance Herauf added one more assist tonight, pushing his two game total with the Bees at three assists.

-Corpus coach Ken McRae was ejected from the game at the 6:43 mark in the second for a game misconduct and as he attempted to exit the ice nearly fell as he was yelling at the officials.

COACH FIXTER SOUNDBITES

On giving up the two goals in the final period: “I wasn’t happy at all about it. We made mistakes that we had talked about not letting bad habits creep into our play, but we have to be happy about the win and the two points.”

On the Bees success in the last two games: “A lot of it was goaltending. Jeff played well and we are starting to get productive and score.”

On the recent surge in offense: “We have gotten it from all sources with Eason and Silver posting their first professional goals, and we have become a much more effective team. We have our key guys scoring again (Maxwell, Masse, Voltera), but I would I would like to see them be more effective on the power play.”

On goaltender Jeff Van Nynatten: “He has done well lately and that is why he played tonight. He has more focus and has been playing well.”

Final thoughts on the weekend: “Overall it was a great weekend. I look for wins on Saturday and like to find them on Sunday.”

Hey Paul, this is directed to your comment about the power play…..

Why not use dmen like Hedberg and Van Hoof on the points on the first power play unit so you can use Maxwell, Voltera and Banga (or Herauf) up front on the first unit and then have another good unit as the #2 line up front with Bonar, Masse (or Silver) and Herauf (or Banga) along with 2 dman like Eason and Blanchett….

It looks to me you leave a liability on defence with Maxwell and Banga at the point and waste some solid up front talent. Also the first unit stays on for the entire 2 minutes usually…..Masse looks like he is totally done after 20 seconds with no effort on the defensive or forecheck side when possession is lost…..

Using forwards on the point depletes your depth on the next line change and line changes there forward once the PP is over, this scenerio at least gives you solid lines after….

I hate to say it but you don’t see this type of situation on the PP in the NHL where you put 2 forwards on the point….

This obviously shows no confidence in your defence in regard to puck possession and offence….how many times have your forwards on the point lost possession, they aren’t exactly glue sticks out there……

Just my 2 cents worth!! Other than that things are shaping up…With a little more stratigic systems and the right personnel in certain roles, this team could go deep….

However, effort from a few vets have to improve immensley…

Can anyone explain why the Monitor is not covering the Bees home games as they have in the past? Over the weekend, I found an “oh by the way” article both on Saturday and Sunday on the second last page of the sports section that was coupled in with some hs volleyball. What gives with them?
