Hidalgo, Texas—TJ Eason netted his first pro goal and the eventual game winner en route to a 5-2 Rio Grande Valley Killer Bee win over the Austin Ice Bats Friday night at the Dodge Arena.

With the win Rio now has 10 points in the standings and snapped a four game winless streak, moving them an important five points ahead of Corpus Christi going into tomorrow’s match-up with the Rayz.

Rio’s Josh Bonar contributed to the effort with a goal and two assists, while newcomer Lance Herauf spark plugged the team with a pair of helpers.

Austin was first on the board at the 8:14 mark with Taylor Raszka netting a power play goal, but Rio’s Jon Hedberg tied things up 1-1 at the 14:42 mark going into the second.

Each team scored on the power play in the second, but it was Eason with the game-winner at 17:37 to put the Bees on top 3-2 going into the final period.

Austin switched goalies in the final period with Miguel Beaudry taking the spot of starter Miroslav Kopriva. but it was no match for the Bees who posted two more goals in the third to come out on top 5-2 over the Ice Bats.

Netminder Jeff Van Nynatten captured his first win of the season with 33 saves while Kopriva suffered the loss with 31 saves in two periods of work. Beaudry ended his night with 12 saves in third period mop-up duty.

Tomorrow the Bees face an important divisional game against the Corpus Christi Rayz. The Bees will sport special 70’s night jersey with $1.50 beer all night and all tickets going for $12.55. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

NOTES

-Josh Bonar had a great night with three points in the contest, one goal and two assists (1-2-3) while Rob Voltera, Dennis Maxwell, Jeremy Van Hoof and newcomer Lance Herauf each ended the night with two. Voltera and Maxwell each notched one goal and one assist (1-1-2), while Herauf and Van Hoof posted two assists (0-2-2).

-Jeff Van Nynatten, along with the help of great defensive play by the Bees, stopped two different 5-on-3 advantages by the Ice Bats at key times in the game.

-Rio held Austin 2-for-12 on the power play, while going 1-for-9 in tonight’s game.

COACH FIXTER SOUND BITES

On the 5-on-3 disadvantage:”Killing off those types of penalty kills are huge. The penalty was a big factor in this win. Although everyone is involved in the penalty kill your goaltender plays the biggest part and Jeff did a tremendous job tonight, which was a huge turning point in tonight’s game.

On the win:”This win was very important because we want to keep teams below us in the standings.”

On the final period play:”I liked the way we responded in the final period. They played up tempo and with determination tonight.”
