Strap Those Kids In

By admin | November 10, 2007

I arrived at HEB Plus in San Juan around 7:30 a.m. Saturday for the car seat giveaway. First thing I see? A car rolling by with a three-year-old in the front seat with no seat belt. In the back seat? An infant being held by someone. My first reaction was “are you kidding me?” Then I realized, “that’s why we’re here.”

Over the course of the next five and a half hours, we gave away almost 700 car seats. The same scene played out at the HEB Plus in Mission. All the players and front office staff were split up between the locations.

One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing kids not in seat belts/car seats. I don’t know if I notice it more since moving here two years ago, or if it really is more common here to see kids crawling around in the back seat. So using an “off day” to participate was no problem.

Of course, many of us grew up before these things were mandatory and we’re fine, right? But the overwhelming evidence is that it’s SO important to buckle the kids up. I’m glad we were able to help spread the word and get seats to those who need them most. Many thanks to HEB, WIC, DPS, Another Closet Self Storage, the Killer Bee Foundation, and everyone who volunteered their time today.

Back to work tomorrow at 4 PM vs. Youngstown. Game broadcast is on ESPN 1240.

What an absolute fantastic promotion. Kudo’s to the killer bee management team and their sponsors for providing such a wonderful gift for those kids who drive around with no car seats….

While visiting McAllen, Pharr and Hidalgo a couple of weeks ago, I was unpleasantly amazed to see parents/adults driving around with kids in the car unbuckled with no car seat…..

Keep up the good work Killer Bees Promotion and Management team….
