Three Out Of Four A’int Bad (and other cliches)

By | October 21, 2007

With opening weekend out of the way, I can say that those were two of the most entertaining games, regular season or otherwise, that I’ve seen in a while. Alot of opening week games plod along with sloppy play and a general feeling of “getting to know you.” Not these two games. That said, both clubs missed a few golden opportunities to score in Saturday’s game. Rio had at least three misses on wide open nets.

Coach Fixter told the team just as the bus was about to pull into the Dodge that if they can get three out of four points every weekend, it’ll be a great year.

After a a day to recoup and watch some football, it’s back on the ice at 10 at the Dodge on Monday. Practice will be there all week.
Other thoughts

–Jason Tapp was outstanding in the two games. I’ve heard he gives up goals in bunches. Once you one, the gates open up. He’s also known as being a hot-head; 80 PIMs last year with Quad City in the UHauL. Makes you think of Ray Emery a bit.

–Both Rio goalies were sharp this weekend, and I believe that the early consensus of the Bees having one of the top tandems in the CHL proved accurate. Not much Van Nynatten could do on Blaznek’s goal. He’s a sneaky guy with great foot speed who can make the most out of tiny openings, as he proved on that goal. Great feed from the corner, too.

–Rio’s power play was interesting even though they were held scoreless. The lineup of Voltera, Edinger, Masse, Maxwell and Banga could be as potent as any man-up fivesome in the league once they click. They showed spurts of gelling and it was fun to watch the flow as they cycled the puck around. Maybe a bit risky putting Banga on the point, but the payoff potential is huge.

–Nice to see a hundred or two Rio fans at the game. Had a few people ask me if they could pick up the radio feed in the building. The Rayz added an-house signal, just like at the Dodge (get your own ideas, Booger), so I know you can listen to Josh Bogorad’s superb call. I’ll see about toting along our transmitter to Corpus and Laredo (maybe Austin too) so you van pick up the Rio feed if you want.
