Preseason Game 2 - Rayz 3, Bees 1

Hidalgo, Texas– In their second preseason matchup the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees fell to the Corpus Christi Rayz 3-1 Monday night at the Dodge Arena.

Both teams were scoreless midway through the game with Corpus striking first on a penalty shot by Joe Blaznek at 10:51 after Rio’s Mark O’Leary fell on the puck in the crease. It was Blaznek’s second goal vs. the Bees in two games.

Nick Lindberg made it a 2-0 game at 17:46 in the second.

Dennis Maxwell cut the lead in half on a short-handed breakway with 14:25 left in the game. But Jason Baird fired back with a power play goal with 9:23 left in the contest to regain the two-goal lead for the Rayz.

Both teams switched goaltenders to start the third with Jeff Van Nynatten taking the spot of starter David Lemanowicz. Playing in his first preseason action, Lemanowicz was impressive despite allowing two goals with with 25 saves, many of them at point blank. Jay Chrapala came in for Jason Tapp, who held Rio scoreless in his 40 minutes of work.

Both Blaznek and Lindberg finished the night with a goal and an assist.

The Bees and Rayz face off in a home-and-home series this weekend to start the regular season, beginning this Friday at Dodge Arena. The first 2500 adults at the game get a Killer Bees jersey courtesy San Juan Pharmacy, Fox Rio 2 and Q 94.5 FM The Rock Station.

-Despite the 3-1 loss, the Killer Bees dominated the battlefield with convincing wins in the fighting department. Marlon Joseph was in a pair of scraps; Rob Voltera and Dan McNeill were in the others. Voltera gave it to Derek Smith in the first of three third period scraps. He pulled Smith’s jersey over his head and stung him with several uppercuts.

-Head Coach Paul Fixter continued to mix and match the lines tonight.

-Both teams combined for 1-for-10 on the power play with Corpus picking up the lone goal.
