Preseason Game 1 - The ride home
By | October 14, 2007
One preseason game in the books, another this Monday at the Dodge. By the time the regular season hits Day 2, the Bees and Rayz will have seen each other four times. That’s a little more Greg Rajan than I can take (Kidding GR, you’re the dean of CHL writers). Tonight was more about shaking off the rust, taking a look at individual performances, and trying to see what works and what doesn’t.
–Great crowd in Corpus tonight. The game was free.
–Nice to see a big contingent of Rio fans make the ride up; meaningless game or not.
–One of the coolest Whataburger stores is on Shorline a few blocks from the Arena. Nothing like a healthy post-game meal. I’m told Mark O’Leary nearly went into shock when told this would be the post-game stop.
–Both teams switched goalies in the third period. Matt Spezza in for Rio and Kevin Couture in for Corpus.
–Rookie referee Zac Wiebe called an awful lot of penalties. At one point Corpus had five power plays to Rio’s one.
– The Corpus line of Blaznek, Quenneville and Baird combined for a beauty of a goal to make it a 3-1 game. They’re gonna do some damage this year. It was a VCR-worthy play.
–Dan McNeill collided with Adam Powell late in the first period and appeared to be a little stung. Luckily he came back and finished the game to no apparent ill effect. He’s been impressive in camp so far and it’d be a shame to see him sit out.
– I thought Van Nynatten was sharp in the early going. Down the other end, Tapp was OK, but it seemed 90% of Rio’s shots came from the outside. He wasn’t tested.
