Sean Gillam is in his fourth season as a full time assistant coach. His No. 7 hangs in the Dodge Arena rafters after being retired by the club on January 5, 2008. A former defenseman, he first came to the Rio Grande Valley in 2003 to serve as a player/assistant coach. He also held the role of captain in the 2004-05 season. A third-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 1994, Gillam appeared in 662 professional regular season and playoff games in the AHL, ECHL, IHL, and CHL. Before coming to the Valley, he made pro stops in Adirondack (AHL), Mississippi (ECHL), Orlando (IHL) and Jackson (ECHL). In Jackson, he held the role of player/assistant coach and captain. He played major junior hockey for the Spokane Chiefs (WHL). Gillam combined for 40 goals and 142 assists for 182 points in 281 career games with the Chiefs and left Spokane as the franchise’s all time leader in games played. Gillam retired after a 10-year playing career to step behind the bench on a full time basis. A native of Lethbridge, Alberta, Sean resides in the Valley with his wife Leigh and son Shane.
