Allan Avery

Goaltending Consultant


Allan Avery serves as goaltending consultant for the Killer Bees and also works with the Western Michigan University Bronco coaching staff, having served as a volunteer goaltending coach since the 2002-03 campaign. A native of Trenton, Mich., Avery spent a season as a backup goaltender for the Broncos during the 1987-88 season before an injury ended his career. Prior to joining the WMU hockey team, Avery was a two-time all-state selection at Trenton High School. His 1986 team won the state title and the 1987 squad ranked third in the state under Bronco Skip Howey. He is a National Bantam Champion as well as a National Midget Finalist during his playing career and has attended USA Hockey National Developmental Summer Programs. Avery’s previous coaching experience includes stints with Detroit area high schools and youth teams. He is currently an assistant coach with the 94 Jackson Generals. Avery spends part of his summers instructing at goaltending camps around the country. Avery’s full –time occupation is a Michigan State Police Trooper where he has been employed since 1995. He patrolled the roadways in south central Michigan for eight years then spent two years working undercover arresting suspects wanted for high-risk felonies. In January of 2005, Avery transferred to First District Headquarters as a traffic crash reconstruction expert. In January of 2007, he was promoted to Sergeant and continues to work in crash reconstruction. Avery lives in Jackson with his wife of 20 years, Beth. She is a graduate of WMU. The Averys have four children: Emily (19), Jessica (17), Brett (14) and Bridget (13).
